With new Covid-19 health and safety measures intact we review how often Walt Disney World cleans the rides at its four theme parks.

With new health measures set by the Centers of Disease Control, the Walt Disney World Resort is taking some extra cleaning steps. The attractions now get cleaned every two hours at Disney theme parks. This means spraying down seats and high-touch areas to help stop spread. Furthermore, hand rails and other spaces around the Resort are frequently cleaned by cast members.

These cleaning procedures often slow down wait times. Attractions can be down anywhere from 15-45 minutes as cleaning commences. However, we often see much shorter times, typically around 20 minutes or so where the lines stop. Disney tries to improve guest experience by increasing calculated wait times in the app. In other words, the app may post a 60-minute wait for a ride, but you’ll often just wait about 30-40 minutes. The added time is just in case the ride closes for cleaning.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that cleaning every two hours is not enough. To aid with this, Disney has installed countless hand sanitizers around the parks and in the queues of the rides. Guests have the option to bring their own hand sanitizer, too. It’s also highly recommended that guests wash their hands throughout the day.

Disney’s commitment to park cleanliness has been at its core from the beginning. Walt Disney imaged a place where families could visit without the typical trash and dirt pile ups found at theme parks in his day. So Disney commits to frequently wiping down surfaces and disposing of every dropped ice cream cone within a moment.

We expect these cleaning measures to continue as long as the public demands them. At some point, the CDC guidelines should lift and more guests will enter the theme parks. When this happens, the cleaning procedures will take far too long to accommodate everyone. Until Disney can come up with a faster cleaning method, we’ll likely see some of these cleaning procedures scale back in the future.
