Walt Disney World Resort is keeping its theme park capacity at a minimum but when will the vacation destination increase its numbers?

Updated: Nov 16, 2020

When Walt Disney World opened its parks in July 2020, guests were required to make a reservation to visit. In addition, Disney World limited the number of attending guests. According to Disney CEO Bob Chapek, the theme parks stop at 35% of their guest capacity on any given day.

So when will Disney start allowing more guests into the parks? For now, Disney is keeping its theme parks at reduced numbers under the guidelines of the Centers of Disease Control. However, Disney can increase its numbers if desired. In fact, Florida state allows theme parks to reopen to full capacity if they choose.

The most popular parks for reservations are: Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and EPCOT. On most days, EPCOT does not run out of park passes as its capacity is much higher than demand. So, even if Disney did reopen to full capacity, we don’t think the parks will increase much. However, Disney’s Hollywood Studios might be much busier than the others due to demand for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

With all of that said, we expect Disney to increase demand once the CDC allows. We don’t expect this until later in 2021, unless the pandemic lessens in the coming months. Based on insider knowledge, we don’t believe that Disney is planning on increasing its capacity to 50% or more until a vaccine or heavily deceased new covid-19 cases exist.

For now guests are enjoying low wait times when visiting the theme parks. Even FastPass+ reservations have been put on hold due to decreased numbers. All of this still means that Disney is in the middle of its phased reopening.
