When Disneyland first opened its Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye back in 1995, guests receive complimentary decoder cards. Using these special cards, guests deciphered a secret language throughout the queue. Since many of us waited hours and hours in line back then, this was a great way to pass the time!
Twenty-five years later, Disneyland has brought back the decoder card. However, this version fits better with the times. Instead of carrying a physical card, just open your Play Disney app. Not only will you able to type in the code to encrypt the messages, but you can also unlock new virtual achievements.
The Play Disney app was created to provide entertainment to guests waiting in line. We recommend downloading the app on your phone before arriving to the parks. It’ll make logging in and familiarizing yourself with the app much easier this way.
2019 was the first year that Disneyland began handing out decoder cards again. The first was for the one-time 90s Nite on March 7, 2020. Shortly after, Disneyland closed the ride for refurbishment. Guests were once again given decoder cards and were invited to walk through the temple while the ride was down.
Disneyland filed permits to refurbish Indiana Jones Adventure again in 2020. If this happens, we wonder whether guests will still roam the temple queue and use their Play Disney app for achievements. While we’d love to see this, we also hope that Disneyland fixes some of the interactive queue elements like the falling ceiling and the recently broken pull rope.
Indiana Jones will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2020. The ride originally debuted as part of Disneyland’s 40th anniversary year.
