After being announced in 2017, we have details about when the TRON roller coaster might open at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

Magic Kingdom is finally getting its first extreme thrill ride! When the TRON Lightcycle Run debuts in Tomorrowland, it’ll be one of the fastest, more electric attractions on property.

While TRON doesn’t have any loops, the coaster clocks at about 60 miles per hour. That’s almost double the speed of Space Mountain!

Walt Disney World plans on debuting the coaster as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. Meaning that the TRON Lightcycle Run likely debuts in summer 2021. However, the coaster could open much sooner if completed fast enough. While most of the track is laid out for the ride, the iconic dome covering is not. Thus, we expect a later opening date than 2020.

Update (October 26, 2020): It appears that TRON may be pushed back to 2022. Disney is waiting for typical crowds to return before unveiling this highly anticipated new coaster.

The TRON coaster first debuted at Shanghai Disneyland in 2016. The ride replaced Space Mountain, making it the only Disneyland-like theme park without a version of the coaster.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is the official partner for TRON at the Magic Kingdom. We expect to see signage and possibly an exit area with advertisements for Enterprise. Of course, Disney will ensure that all pieces of the ride will feel futuristic to match the attraction.

When we visited TRON in Shanghai, the use of technology blew us away. There are solid walls that digitally become transparent, tons of neon lights, and an indoor queue with heart-racing special effects.

The coaster is also unique for its motorbike-style ride. Traveling at fast speeds this way greatly adds to the thrill. While we wondered if the ride would feel too similar to the Hagrid coaster at Universal Orlando, but attractions feel very different. Needless to say, the Magic Kingdom won’t be the same after TRON opens.
