When will Disney theme parks stop using virtual queues and boarding passes for rides like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance?

When Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance first opened in December 2019 at the Walt Disney World Resort, the attraction introduced a new virtual queue system to ride. By using the Disneyland app on their mobile devices, guests can snatch up boarding pass that would be called when it was their time to experience the attraction. Disney created this system knowing that more guests would want to experience the ride each day than the attraction had capacity.

Since its debut, the Disney virtual queue has been introduced to Disneyland, and it has changed its process several times. Now guests have two opportunities throughout the day to join the virtual queue in hope of a boarding pass for Rise of the Resistance. WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure in the new Avengers Campus (Disney California Adventure) also uses a virtual queue.

So when will Disney stop using these queues and boarding passes for popular rides? As it seems, Disney has no plans to get rid of virtual queues. In fact, it will likely be the opposite, and future attractions will also use this system.

Back in May of 2021, Disney CEO, Bob Chapek, stated at the J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media, and Communications Conference that virtual queues were here to stay. Though the virtual queues are controversial, as some guests miss out on a boarding passes, the system seems to work much better than the alternative—which is having guests wait hours in line for unreliable rides. That is because newer attractions tend to break down and may cause heavy delays. So guests could end up waiting most of the day to experience only one attraction.

When Universal Orlando open its Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure rollercoaster in 2019, many guests spent the entire day waiting for the one ride. As the rollercoaster had technical issues, it sometimes stopped working altogether. This experience became infamous in the theme park world. Though Hagrid’s runs much smoother today, Rise of the Resistance still has downtimes—especially at Walt Disney World. So we will likely see the Virtual Queue used for future attractions like the TRON Lightcycle rollercoaster at Magic Kingdom.

However, we don’t expect that WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure will use the virtual queue forever. It’s only because the ride is newer and still has some downtime that it makes sense for a virtual queue. Once Spidey’s kinks are worked out, we expect the ride to stop using boarding passes. We also may see virtual queues roll out as a paid feature for Walt Disney World in the near future.
