Universal’s Epic Universe theme park has been delayed again. Originally set to open in 2023, the upcoming theme park is experiencing further setbacks.

We reported back in April that Universal Orlando’s upcoming theme park, Epic Universe, was on pause. Constructed south of the current theme parks, Epic Universe would transport guests into fantastic new worlds. So far, only Nintendo franchises including Super Mario have been confirmed. However, rumors also state that lands based around Universal Classic Monsters, How to Train Your Dragon, and Harry Potter will also have a home there.

Construction crews were still present this summer, clearing the land for Epic Universe. However, in a statement given by Universal last week, this may soon halt. “We are continually adjusting our cost base and capital, including pausing development of our Epic Universe project in Florida, for example, until the future becomes more certain,” said Jeff Shell, CEO of NBCUniversal.

In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, nothing seems certain. However, since Orlando so heavily relies on tourism, we expect to see invitations to invite outside guests. Orange County, where Orlando is based, also appears to want Epic Universe to come to fruition. The Orange County commissioners promised up to $5 million in credits for Universal to relocate a pipeline under the upcoming park’s grounds.

Only time will tell when Epic Universal will resume construction. To get updates on the best Universal Orlando tips and attraction opening dates, sign up for our free e-mail newsletter! You can also check out our Universal Orlando guidebook here!
