A review of Black Tap Craft Burgers and Shakes restaurant in Downtown Disney district at the Disneyland Resort.

Revised: Nov 2, 2020

When Black Tap was first announced for Downtown Disney at the Disneyland Resort, our initial thought was—wow, another burger joint? After all, nearly every restaurant in the shopping and dining district sells at least one burger. On top of that, Splitsville and the new Ballast Pointe brewery (located literally above Black Tap) are each known for their craft burgers.

So, why another burger place?

Well, as we discovered, Black Tap is far better than its burger options. Of course, you can order a uniquely styled craft burger. We got the pizza burger, a fairly standard angus burger with a large side dish of pizza sauce. It came deconstructed, so you could choose your toppings and then dunk the burger in the pizza sauce. The burger was good, and so were the fries. Plenty for one person and the flavor was just right!

But the shakes are what make this place great. Think of Black Tap as a futuristic version of an ice cream parlor. Here you can get crazy versions of shakes you’ve only dreamed of! We sat a the shake bar and watched their team create massive, multi-layer dessert drinks to our amazement. Thick frosting coats the top half of each Crazy Shake glass before candy, cereal and/or other assortments are stuck to the frosting!

We ordered the Churro Choco Taco, a combination of creamy vanilla ice cream, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and dulce de leche sauce—with two churros and a Choco Taco shoved into it! The shake was plenty enough to share, and we’d certainly have it again and again!

Black Tap’s decor is very modern-chic, with all-black walls and ceilings. Most of the furniture is balsa wood colored, and splashes of color are found occasionally around the room on abstract art pieces. Overall, this gives Black Tap a cool, youthful vibe that’s both inviting and unassuming.

We waited about 30 minutes in line to get a table (the restaurant had only been open for a week). The service was great, with our waiter and the managers warmly greeting us and raving about the shakes. Social distancing measures now limit the number of guests allowed in the restaurant. You may need a reservation and enter a queue before being seated outdoors or indoors.

If you don’t have time to wait, Black Tap also offers an outdoor “Shake Window” located near the Splitsville end of the restaurant. There you can order most shakes, but unfortunately not all of the Crazy Shakes, like the Churro Choco Taco, are available at the window.
