The Disneyland Resort proposed a massive theme park expansion that could increase the space of both its current theme parks.
In a big surprise today, Disneyland announced big plans to expand its resort. DisneylandFuture would add new attractions, experiences, dining, and even hotels to the Southern California theme park destination.
Located near the Disneyland Hotel and next to the existing two theme parks, the expansion is nearly the size of Disney California Adventure! Disney did not specify new attractions for this expansion. However, Peter Pan, Tangled, Zootopia, and Tron were given as examples of properties used for upcoming lands overseas. So it’s possible we could see these in the expanded lands!
Disney has been pretty clear that it will not be a third park. Instead, an extension of the two existing theme parks. It also appears that guests could possibly access the expansion both from the Pixar Pier area of Disney California Adventure and Critter Country in Disneyland. It’s also very possible that guests staying at the Disneyland Hotel will have direct access to the new areas. So far, Downtown Disney does not have a plan for removal.
In addition, Disneyland proposed a shopping area for the current Toy Story Parking Lot. This would include new hotels, shopping, dining, and a smaller theme park-like experience. Guests would likely park in a newer garage built closer to the Disneyland main gate.
With that said, it could be difficult for Disneyland to launch this huge task. The City of Anaheim has fairly strict rules about expanding resorts. However, with a bright future coming, Disney may be able to convince the city to change its rules. After all, the new shopping, hotels, and attractions will provide plenty of new jobs for the local economy.
