Disney in the Dark: Why Isn’t Disneyland Open Yet?

Why isn’t Disneyland open yet? We dive into why both of the theme parks remained closed and how they could soon reopen.

It’s been over six months since Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure closed their gates. Every other Disney-owned theme park in the world has since reopened. Even Hong Kong Disneyland, which closed again due to government regulations, reopens again this week. So why isn’t the original Disneyland back?

The short answer is, Disneyland hasn’t received opening guidelines from the State of California. Governor Gavin Newsom recently tiered counties by their COVID-19 rates, allowing select counties to reopen businesses depending on their improvements. Orange Country, where the Disneyland Resort resides, is currently in the second-to-worse tier. However, there are no guidelines for theme parks in any of the tiers, even the “best” one.

This week, Disneyland said that it’s ready to reopen. While there will be needed training for Cast Members, it appears that the health and safety precautions are in place. If announced within the next week, Disneyland could possibly open in October.

California the most populated state in the country. With nearly 40 million residents, numbers of COVID-19 infections have been some of the highest in the country. However, the state has since reduced its infection numbers significantly. As counties expand testing and residents enforce social distancing, there are much fewer cases per capita.

So why is California not allowing theme parks to reopen? Sadly, the answer remains unclear. It appears that Newsom is worried about an imminent second wave that could reemerge. Disney and other theme destinations have pushed back on California, declaring that “it’s time” to reopen their parks. So far, Disneyland has installed plexiglass barricades, hand sanitizers, and markers for social distancing. Like Walt Disney World, it plans to reopen with limited crowds and required face masks.
