How likely is it that upcoming Disney attractions could be cancelled? With Walt Disney World and Disneyland closed, many upcoming projects remain in limbo. We analyze six of the most-anticipated attractions and examine if they’ll open — or get the chop.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure

EPCOT – SAFE!
This family friendly ride was set to debut this summer at EPCOT. However, even after the closure of Walt Disney World, we expect that Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is safe. In fact, the ride will likely open shortly after the parks resume business. Construction for this attraction is nearly complete and could easily drive fresh crowds to EPCOT in the years to come.

TRON Lightcycle Run

Magic Kingdom – SAFE!
Disney’s most anticipated new ride is TRON, a coaster based around the film series of the same name. After debuting at Shanghai Disneyland in 2016, the coaster’s track and show building are mostly completed. TRON is set to debut in 2021 and we expect that date to stick. The new attraction could launch with the park’s 50th anniversary in October 2021 – if not sooner.

Mary Poppins Attraction

EPCOT – Likely Cancelled
Disney attributes the massive success of its Mary Poppins film to the funding of Walt Disney World. Since the resort turns 50 next year, Disney announced a special attraction at EPCOT based around the iconic film. However, since construction hasn’t begun in the UK Pavilion (and Disney hasn’t announced any details about the attraction), we anticipate that this project will be scrapped.

DISNEY California Adventure – SAFE!
The Disneyland Resort’s newest land was slated to open at Disney California Adventure in July 2020. However, the resort’s closure led to a delay in construction. Avengers Campus is fortunately just a few months from completion, so we anticipate that this land will debut soon after the parks reopen. With that said, the land’s second Avengers-themed ride may be postponed for budget reasons.

EPCOT – SAFE!
The show building and coaster have already been constructed for this attraction at EPCOT. However, this technologically advanced thrill ride is pretty expensive to make. Furthermore, we anticipate that Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will have a delayed open. As Disney staggers out its upcoming attractions, we see a 2022 opening date.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Disneyland – Uncertain
Walt Disney World closed just days after its newest ride, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway debuted. We loved this attraction and expect it to be a huge hit for years to come. However, Disneyland was set to receive its own version of Runaway Railway in 2022. Located in Mickey’s Toontown at the back of the park, buildings have already been cleared to make way for the ride. Nevertheless, theme park attendance will decide what Disney invests in for the future. If Runaway Railway continues to make waves at Walt Disney World, then a near-clone of the ride might be a sure-fire way to bring crowds to Disneyland. With that said, we now expect Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway to open no sooner than 2023.

Keep in mind, these are just projections based on possible budget cuts by Disney. Only time will tell how theme parks continue to be enjoyed by audiences around the world.
