Which Walt Disney World Resort rollercoasters close during the rain and other weather? The answers may surprise you!
Rain is a typical and expected force of nature in Central Florida. Whether it’s spring, summer, fall, or winter, guests can expect at least a little rain during their visit. In fact, the summer tends to have daily showers in the mid-afternoon. So what happens to the Disney rollercoasters when it rains at the theme parks?
Since only a few of Disney’s rollercoasters are indoors, many of them will close during severe weather. In other words, a light rain might not stop one of the seven coasters around the resort but heavy rain likely will. Furthermore, if there’s a lightning storm, you can expect that most coasters will close ahead of the first bolt.
Disney Roller Coasters that Close for Rain (and ones that don’t)
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Magic Kingdom) – May stay open in light rain, closes during thunderstorms and heavy rain.
- Space Mountain (Magic Kingdom) – Indoors and rarely closes due to weather.
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Magic Kingdom) – Typically stays open in the rain but closes during storms.
- Barnstormer (Magic Kingdom) – Closes in heavy rain and storms.
- Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster (Hollywood Studios) – Indoors and rarely closes for weather.
- Slinky Dog Dash (Hollywood Studios) – Stays open for light rain, closes during thunderstorms and heavy rain.
- Expedition Everest (Animal Kingdom) – Won’t close in light rain but will for heavier rain and lightning.

It’s also important to note that other attractions may close due to severe weather. This includes Test Track (Epcot), Dumbo the Flying Elephants (Magic Kingdom), and Swiss Family Treehouse (Magic Kingdom). There are several others but the good news is that once the storm passes, guests can expect that the attractions will quickly reopen.
All in all, Disney realizes that there is extreme weather and has been dealing with it for about 50 years. So, don’t worry too much about it dampening—sorry, groan—your vacation!
