We have 10 predictions for the reopening of the Disneyland Resort theme parks.
1. Required Reservations – Alright, this one might be a given, since Disneyland already planned for this in July. We expect a required park reservation on top of a ticket or annual pass to visit. We also anticipate that Disneyland will keep crowds to around 20% capacity at each park.
2. Required Face Coverings – Another easy prediction, but still necessary to point out. In fact, we expect facial coverings to be a norm at theme parks into 2021.
3. MaxPass Is Back – The paid FastPass system, MaxPass, has been a popular add-on for guests visiting Disneyland’s theme parks. MaxPass allows guests to make digital FastPass reservations for $20 a day. Since many annual passholders already pre-purchased this amenity, we expect that Disneyland will somehow include MaxPass to help spread out queues. We also may see new rides added to the MaxPass benefit.
4. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Will Still Have Issues – Since its debut in January, this amazing attraction has experienced ongoing, daily downtimes. While Walt Disney World’s version is better than it was earlier in the year, the ride still breaks down quite frequently. We expect that Disneyland’s version will be no different as the closure didn’t allow for ride improvements.
5. Annual Passes Won’t Be On Sale – Due to crowd size limits, we expect that Disneyland won’t sell annual passports to guests until possibly 2021. However, we do expect that Disneyland will allow current annual passholders to renew.
6. Park Hopping Will Be Allowed – Walt Disney World isn’t allowing park hopping for now, but we expect that Disneyland will in some capacity. While park hopping may not come right away, we expect it to function like the Disney Flex Pass, with certain allotments for each park per day. For example, there will be spots for guests wishing to park hop, spots just for Disneyland, and spots just for Disney California Adventure.

7. Not All Dining Will Be Available – Since the crowd levels are low, famous restaurants like the Blue Bayou and Carthay Circle may wait to seat guests. Instead, priority will be given to dining with mobile ordering availability like the Red Rose Taverne in Fantasyland and Galactic Grill in Tomorrowland.
8. The Haunted Mansion Will Remain Closed – The Haunted Mansion is currently under refurbishment. We don’t expect the ride to reopen with the parks just yet. Furthermore, the elevator scene doesn’t allow for social distancing. So, unless Disneyland has figured out a way to walk guests into the elevator or around it, this ride may not reopen for a while.
9. Massive Discounts for Locals – We believe that Annual Passholders will save big on hotel stays in 2020 and early 2021. Also, Southern California residents may be able to purchase discounted multi-day tickets. Overall, Disneyland won’t have many out-of-state visitors, so it’ll rely even more on locals tourism.
10. Disneyland Will Reopen This Fall – When Disneyland first closed this spring, we predicted that the parks wouln’t reopen until September. However, recent delays may push this back into early October. While Governor Gavin Newsom stated that California is working on a solution to reopen its theme parks, no announcement has been made. Nevertheless, we expect that we’ll hear something very soon from the state.
Again, these are just predictions. Nothing is set in stone until Disneyland officially announces its plans. To get updates on Disneyland’s reopening, sign up for our free e-mail newsletter! You can also follow us on Instagram and Twitter.
