Wow! Broadway’s ‘Hamilton’ to Stream on Disney+

Hamilton Coming to Disney+

Hamilton is coming to Disney+! Subscribers can stream the live, onstage recording starring Lin-Manuel Miranda beginning on July 3rd!

Disney’s latest direct-to-stream film is the Broadway musical production of Hamilton. Filmed live at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City just before the original cast concluded its run including lead and writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film was originally scheduled for an October 2021 release in movie theaters.

Over the years, the musical has received several Tony awards and sold out shows all over the country. The musical also resonated with teens and tweens who love the hip hop score along with an American historical theme. Hamilton also changed Broadway as many of the characters, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, are typically played by people of color.

Hamilton has some fairly risqué themes and language, so Disney+ is a fairly interesting placement for the film. However, Disney reportedly purchased the rights for $75 million and intends to cash in.

The news comes just after Broadway theatres announced a summer closure, at least through Labor Day. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, only one of Disney’s theme parks has reopened and movie theaters remain closed. Now Disney’s focus is gaining streaming subscribers.
