Disneyland’s park capacity has grown since the arrival of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge—but what is the official number?
Like clockwork, the Disneyland Resort hits capacity around the holiday season. Once the crowds become unbearable, the park will shut its gates to new visitors. While this can be incredibly upsetting for families, but the theme park does this for the safety and comfort of its guests.
So, what is the number for Disneyland’s capacity? While the world-famous theme park has never officially released the digits, we have a pretty clear guess. It’s believed that before Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opened in May 2019, Disneyland’s capacity was 80,000. That’s about 1,000 guests per acre. However, now that Galaxy’s Edge is open, the theme park increased in size by 14 acres. Thus, we can say that Disneyland holds about 90,000 visitors at a time.
While theme park resort management has stated in the past that Galaxy’s Edge would increase Disneyland’s capacity, that doesn’t mean more tickets will be issued. To appease its in-park guests, the theme park will restrict access based on several factors. For example, attraction wait times, restaurant availability, and general crowding in certain spots may signal for a stop of ticket sales.
It’s also very rare that Disney California Adventure, Disneyland’s sister park, hits its capacity. Disney California Adventure has a capacity of about 40,000 guests. Even when Disneyland closes its gates, guests are diverted to DCA. However, the smaller amount of attractions at DCA can make visiting that park even worse. For example, on a crowded day, DCA may have five attractions with 100+ minute wait times. Conversely, Disneyland, even when sold out, may have just three attractions with wait times that exceed 100 minutes.
If you’re booking a trip to the Disneyland Resort between Christmas and New Year’s Day, you may want to consider the crowds. It’s best to plan ahead by booking your tickets, restaurant reservations, and leaving in plenty of time to beat the crowds. With Disneyland, the early bird gets the worm, which means you’ll have much shorter wait times in the first two hours of park opening. Most crowds appear around 10 AM as they plan to stay through the nightly fireworks.
