The Walt Disney World Resort has expanded its theme park capacity to 35%, up from the previous 25% cap.
Since reopening in July 2020, the Walt Disney World Resort kept the capacity of its four theme parks to 25%. Since demand was low at the beginning, fewer guests attended the parks than capacity would allow. For a while, Disney’s Hollywood Studios was the only theme park that regularly maxed out its reservations.
However, it now appears that Disney has expanded its capacity to 35%. In an earnings call last week, CEO Bob Chapek explained that the theme parks could safely house more guests. According to guidelines set by the CDC, guests need to be 6 feet apart at all times. Disney believes that this can be done at 35% capacity.
While it’s unclear whether or not Disney has already made this move, we have our concerns. Park guests aren’t always great at maintaining the social distancing measures. While most follow the space markings in the line for rides, guests often move very close to others while walking in the parks. This, however, has also happened to us inside our local grocery store.
With all of that said, we’re not doctors and can’t make this call. It’s just a concern that we have after spending time in the parks. Overall, we see that masks and social distancing measures are respected by most guests.

We still expect that Disney will increase its capacity to 50% sometime in 2021. However, with the holiday season coming, Disney says that many reservations are nearing full. Hopefully, we’ll see more dining and attraction options become available to accommodate the increase in attendance.
