According to several sources, the Disneyland Resort plans to return Soarin’ Over California in 2020. The original attraction will run with Disney California Adventure’s Food & Wine Festival from February 28 through April 21, 2020.
Soarin’ Over California was one of the original attractions that launched at Disney California Adventure when the park opened 2001. However, the ride closed to celebrate a simultaneous release of Soarin’ Over the World at Shanghai Disneyland and Epcot in 2016.
One of the benefits of project-based attractions is that Disney can opt to change out the ride scenes. Similar to Star Tours, Soarin’ is able to flip over to its original scene fairly easily. We last saw Soarin’ Over California surprisingly return in the summer 2019. Though the attraction was only scheduled for June, popular demand kept it around through the end of August.
It appears that Disney California Adventure has plans to show Soarin’ Over California in seasonal operation. Space Mountain has a similar change typically around May 4th to celebrate Star Wars Day. Like Soarin’ did in 2019, Disneyland extended Hyperspace Mountain for several months, but into 2020.
Personally, we love both versions of the ride. However, California has a special place in our hearts. Soarin’ Over the World can be seen year round in Epcot at Walt Disney World, Shanghai Disneyland, and now Tokyo’s DisneySea (where it’s called Soaring: Fantastic Flight). However, all of the different versions of Soarin’ have differing final scenes as the glider arrives back to their perspective areas. For example, Epcot’s ends in Walt Disney World, and Shanghai’s flies over the towering Chinese city.
