Shanghai Disneyland reopened on Monday, May 11, 2020 with extensive safety measures for its parks guests and Cast Members.
Guests arrived wearing masks and were greeted by Cast Members and Disney characters. To help with social distancing, only the park only allowed 1/3 of its typical capacity. Furthermore, attractions used spacing markers to keep guests apart. Large block decals were placed throughout queues instructing guests where they could stand.
Other requirements for guests included temperature screens, the wearing of face masks, the use of plastic hand coverings for rides like Buzz Lightyear, the use of hand sanitizer, and keeping a row apart on each ride. For example, Pirates of the Caribbean sat guests every other row. Additionally, dining areas (where masks are not required) blocked certain half of the tables to spread guests apart.

While it’s still very unclear what will happen in the U.S. theme parks, we do know that Disneyland is watching Shanghai to see what works. So far, the limited crowds have allowed for short wait times and even spread guests out for larger gatherings like the show in front of the Enchanted Storybook Castle.
Furthermore, some of Shanghai’s policies are in line with government regulations such as face masks and identification checks at entry. As Disney Springs begins reopening on May 20, 2020, the Walt Disney World Resort asks guests and Cast Members to wear facial coverings.
Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts have no set a reopening date, but we anticipate that news soon. To get updates on Walt Disney World and Disneyland reopening, sign up for our free e-mail newsletter! You can also follow us on Instagram and Twitter.
