We’re big fans of Marvel’s Avengers and have missed seeing the Marvel Cinematic Universe on screen since movie theaters closed. As we wait for upcoming releases on Disney+ and on the big screen, we decided to give the new Marvel’s Avengers video game a try.
The game, developed by Crystal Dynamics (Tomb Raider) and published by Square Enix (Final Fantasy) is overall, incredible fun. Players can choose from Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Iron Man, and newcomer, Ms. Marvel. The team is certainly mighty as they take on the technologically advanced soldiers and androids created by the villainous AIM.
What makes Marvel’s Avengers exciting are the cinematic sweeps and high-action brawls. Iron Man and Thor literally fly over rough terrain, blasting enemies with thunder and lasers. Though Black Widow would seem like a far less fun choice, she really delivers, grappling, punching, and blasting her way through the adventure. Black Widow can also turn her team invisible to help evade enemies!
Nothing quite matches Hulk though who stomps, crawls, and clobbers his way onto every scene. You can even pick up enemies and use their bodies as weapons! However, our favorite is newcomer Kamala Khan, or Ms. Marvel. The game closely follows her story as a seemingly freak accident transforms this young Desi-American woman into a mighty Avenger. Ms. Marvel is a polymorph and able to stretch her body to tackle the baddies.
For those who don’t play video games much, we highly recommend playing this one on easy mode. You’ll still have all of the fun but the enemies will be easier to destroy. That isn’t to say that Marvel’s Avengers will be a breeze. Fighting as Ms. Marvel is significantly less cumbersome than learning to fly as Iron Man. However, as you play the main campaign, characters unlock. Though the campaign does a good job of helping players learn the ropes, it takes plenty of trip ups before the controls become intuitive.
Additionally, while many elements from the Marvel Cinematic Universe make their way into this story, they aren’t one in the same. For example, the characters aren’t played by the film actors and they have slightly different personalities. Nevertheless, Tony Stark is still plenty snarky and Cap is an all-around good guy—though he does curse from time to time.
Perhaps our biggest complaint about the game are the challenging camera angles. Sometimes it’s hard to see where the enemies are hitting you from. As this game is mostly about its multiplayer mode, we hope that updates roll out with some improvements. Nevertheless, we’re excited to play more characters as they become available. So far, Spider-Man is confirmed for Sony PlayStation, but Black Panther and Hawkeye will also make their way into the game.
