Disney announced this week that Pixar’s Soul will release on the Disney+ streaming service on December 25, 2020.
Good news for Disney+ subscribers: Pixar’s Soul will begin streaming on Christmas Day! The animated film stars Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Angela Bassett, and Daveed Diggs.
Back in April, Disney moved the release date of Soul to November 20th. However, due to ongoing theater restrictions and limited attendance, Disney decided to another big change. Disney still plans a limited theatrical release, likely to make the film a contender for the best animated feature film.
Soul follows a music teacher, Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), who has his soul separated from his body. The film explores who we are through Joe’s adventure to The Great Before where he meets another soul, 22, voiced by Tina Fey.

Soul cost around $150 million to make. While that figure may also include advertising money, it still seems like a high price for a Disney+ movie. Nevertheless, the live-action Lady and the Tramp still cost Disney $60 million to produce. That film debuted on the streaming service.
Another theory is that Soul may not be what Disney and Pixar wanted. Though it’s helmed by the critically acclaimed director, Pete Docter (Insider Out and Up), perhaps Soul didn’t match up? I suppose we’ll find out on Christmas Day!
