Beginning in 2021, the Walt Disney World Resort will no longer offer free MagicBands for guests staying at its on-site hotels.
Since their introduction in 2013, the MagicBand has been a huge pull for guests staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel. MagicBands are scannable and wearable devices that allow guests to tap into their hotel rooms, the theme parks, and pay on property.
Though the Bands have been complimentary in the past, Disney will begin charging for them starting January 1, 2021. While we’re not certain how Disney will make up for this perk, we see the company moving away from many waste products. Though the MagicBand is a great souvenir, guests can still reuse their existing bands or purchase their own.
However, visitors don’t need MagicBands to enjoy their vacation. Instead guests are asked to use their mobile devices for scanning into the the parks, paying for food, and unlocking their rooms. We’ve used the phone function for the hotel room and its worked more consistently than our MagicBands.

We can’t prove it, but we believe that Disney has been planning to discontinue its free MagicBand service for quite some time. Last year, Disney introduced MagicBands with special designs for a discounted rate. Guests will still be able to purchase discounted MagicBands with new designs in 2021.
