We review the delicious and upgraded Jurassic Cafe in Universal Studios Hollywood – a must-try dining spot located in the Lower Lot!
We love theme park food. In fact, eating is one of our favorite things to do when we head out to Disney or Universal park. Theme park food is fun because it immerses you in both a themed atmosphere and themed dishes.
Well, at least, that’s what it’s supposed to do. The original Jurassic Cafe sure looked like something out of the original movie, but the food was almost inedible. From soggy burgers to papery french fries, we avoided this place like a raptor on the loose!
When Universal started remodeling the Jurassic Cafe for a Jurassic World theme, we were excited to try new dining. We’re happy to report that Jurassic Cafe is now great. The American and Costa Rica-inspired food are both satisfying and delicious. Of course, the quality is closer to a fast food joint than a table service restaurant, but we got our fill!
The inside of the restaurant has a pop art feel. There are images of dinos everywhere, but tastefully placed on the walls. We also dig the blue and gray outdoor color scheme which you don’t often see in dining joints. Inside felt like a cool step away from the bustle of the theme park (we also went around 11am and the place was dead).
Chicken sandwiches are all the rave now and Jurassic Cafe has a killer one. The Isla Chicken Sandwich is a crispy chicken filet with tangy sauce and tomato. Usually it comes with plantain chips and a slaw, but we traded the chips for seasoned curly fries. The fries are packed with flavor and tasted a lot like Jack-in-the-Box’s curly fries.
We really wish that Universal changed the name of this eatery. The new menu is nothing like the original (which still has terrible scores on Yelp), so ignore the critics from years ago. The new Jurassic Cafe is now one of the better dining places in Universal Studios Hollywood.
