The Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closing for refurbishment in spring 2020!
Roller coaster fans, you may want to brace yourself: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closing for several weeks this year. Walt Disney World’s version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be under refurbishment from May 4 – 21, 2020.
Big Thunder turns 40 this year at the Magic Kingdom, which means that it’ll need some TLC. However, there is no word if the theme park will celebrate the coaster’s birthday in any meaningful way. Big Thunder turned 40 last year at Disneyland, and the park had very little fanfare.
However, that doesn’t mean that the ride isn’t highly regarded. In fact, its one of the more popular e-ticket attractions at Walt Disney World. We also recommend it as a great starter coaster for a first-time rider as its top speed is only 35 mph (56 km/h).
Guests are expected to pour into Walt Disney World in 2021 for the resort’s 50th anniversary. Thus, Disney must ensure that many of its most popular rides are in tip-top shape for the events to come.
It’s difficult to believe that some of these now classic attractions are turning half a century old! Since Disney does such a great job of keeping them maintained, many of them feel incredibly fresh. Unfortunately, we’ll likely see several refurbs like this one for Big Thunder in the months to come. In the end, we expect it the downtime to be well worth it.
