Artemis Fowl gets a Disney+ release and skips movie theaters. The unprecedented move comes in a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on the novel by the same name, Artemis Fowl follows a family involved in both crime and magic. With both urban and high fantasy elements, the middle grade novel has enthralled kids since its debut in 2001. Nine books exist in the series.
The movie’s star-studded cast includes Josh Gad, Colin Farrell, and Dame Judi Dench. Fowl was originally set to debut on May 20, 2020. A Disney+ release date hasn’t been announced, but we expect it to be sometime this spring.

In recent years, Disney has become the highest grossing movie producer. With seven films in 2019 making over a billion dollars in revenue, the changing tide comes swiftly. Nevertheless, it’s hard to predict Artemis Fowl’s success in the box office. It seems that most audiences didn’t previously know the storyline. But fantasy films to do well with moviegoers, as long as the plot is decent.
Though it appears Disney is throwing in the towel with Artemis Fowl, that’s likely not the case. Disney packs its film release schedule to the brim and doesn’t have much wiggle room. Other films, including Black Widow and Mulan, had their dates pushed back, thus cramming the future lineup even more.
Fowl also reportedly cost $125 million to make, which is a big price for a Disney+ film. However, the streaming service is one of the company’s hottest new tickets to longterm success. At this point, anything to keep subscribers engaged is a good thing, even if it costs a lot. If Artemis Fowl scores well, it could lead to merchandise, future films, or even a possible Disney+ series.
