When will Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopen from its refurbishment at the Disneyland Resort?
Today, after a busy Labor Day weekend, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed at the Disneyland Resort. The ride is undergoing a scheduled refurbishment. All Disney attractions need a little TLC from time to time. But when will the ride reopen?
Update (9/29/21): Disneyland posted a reopening date of November 5, 2021 for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It’s possible that this date could be delayed as it is still in refurbishment. Hopefully we’ll see the iconic ride back on track soon!
As of today, Disneyland has not released the reopening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. However, we expect the ride to return before the holiday season, likely in November or early December. One of the downsides of having a ride like this closed is that it can make other attractions have longer wait times.

Big Thunder reopened with the parks on April 30, 2021, and has been chugging along ever since. However, the attraction has experienced multiple shutdowns ever since. So why didn’t Disneyland refurbish the ride while the parks were closed? Several factors likely play into that answer. First, many Disney Cast Members who could refurb the ride hadn’t been called back to the work. Second, Disneyland may not have had enough time to schedule this type of maintenance before learning from California that they could reopen. Finally, Disneyland may not have known what types of fixes the over 40-year-old attraction needed until it ran daily for a number of months.
