If you’ve ever wanted to step into the action of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, now is your time. The Void’s newest virtual reality experience delivers just that! We are so excited to share our Avengers: Damage Control review with you:
We visited on opening day, October 18th, 2019, in Downtown Disney at the Disneyland Resort for a spin. As it turns out, Marvel Studios and ILMxLAB have fully realized every kid’s dream of becoming a superhero in this stunning and thrilling virtual reality adventure.
The Void brings virtual worlds to life using conventional VR and augmented reality. In other words, many of the objects that you see like, handrails, walls, and statues, are actually in the room with you. You can touch them, but they appear differently in your visor than they do in real life. This effect allows for the experience to transform any room into a completely immersive, believable world. In this case, it puts you right in the center of an Avengers film! To sweeten the deal, you even get superpowers to help take on the bad guys!
The attraction’s story begins with instructions from Shuri—Black Panther’s genius little sister—as she combines Stark and Wakandan technologies to create a new super suit. As her guest, you get to put on this suit which looks fantastically like a mix of the Iron Man and Black Panther armor. Before you put on the gear, you’ll get to choose a distinctive color that will help distinguish you from your teammates (usually around 4 per group).
This story appears to take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame with characters from that franchise. Like many theme park-based attractions, something goes horribly wrong in the storyline, and a wicked villain comes forward to steal your new tech. That’s when you’re joined by several of the Avengers to help battle the baddies!
Overall, the VR experience feels like an awesome, giant video game. Your suit can fire laser beams and also create a virtual shield to block attacks. There are also several special effects like wafts of ice-cold air to simulate your surroundings. Your suit’s shield also stores the energy from hits to rerelease in a fiery fury!
As we are big Marvel fans, we had a great time being in the center of that universe. We loved seeing our favorite superheroes come to life and experiencing their powers firsthand. If you’re not a Marvel fan, the story may be confusing as the characters, their abilities, and the surprise villain only make sense to those who have seen the Avengers films. However, we believe that Avengers: Damage Control was purely created for the fans. It’s next-level video gaming with a satisfying thrill. Working as a team to defeat virtual bad guys is also a lot more rewarding than playing a standard escape room. Also, because of heavy equipment, this experience is best for ages 10 and up.
So far, the Void in Downtown Disney has hosted other well-received VR experiences based on Star Wars and Wreck-It Ralph franchises. Damage Control also serves as a precursor to Avengers Campus, a Marvel-themed land set to debut in 2020 at Disney California Adventure. We don’t anticipate this experience in Walt Disney World due to Universal Studios’ deal with Marvel before Disney’s purchase of the company. This VR experience will only last for a limited time in Downtown Disney.
